1970s Speckle Tweed Coat Med.

1970s Speckle Tweed Coat Med.

One of the things I love about vintage coats is the quality of the fabrics that were used. This early 1970s coat is constructed from a gorgeous speckled wool tweed that would cost a fortune today if you could even find it. Sure you see similar LOOKING fabrics on the market  but all you need to do is touch them and you can tell the difference. The newer  blended fabrics are flimsier and less durable. They often pill with wear and become shapeless as time goes on.

This fabric in this coat is a rich novelty tweed. The overall tone is brown but it is speckled with little multi colored nubs. It is thick and warm....to keep out the chilly winter winds. The style is a modified trench. Double breasted and belted with a semi flared hem. It has a handsome tailored collar and large patch pockets. The lining is brown satin and the translucent buttons and buckle are dark amber.

The label reads Ken Meritt for Braetan and the tailoring is lovely. Fine tailoring helps a garment keep it's shape and this coat of 25 years or more looks as good as the day it was made.

It is a medium size but let me emphasize that vintage coats are usually more fitted than modern especially around the armholes. When you check the measurements allow for enough ease for the clothing you will be wearing underneath. Ideally  your bust measurement should probably be no more than 37". Actual measurements are as follows.

Bust 40"

Waist 38"

Hips Free

Sleeve length 22 1/2" ( these types of coats tend to have shorter sleeves than we are used to, longer gloves work well)

Length of coat from shoulder to hem 37" (not very long so will look best on a person of small/average stature, I'm going to say 5'6" or under)

Excellent Condition
