Tangerine Boutique - Vintage Clothing and Accessories
To determine a woman's hat size measure the head all around (front to back)
at the center of the forehead. The measurement
22" has traditionally been considered
the "average" size we will call
that medium. Hat sizes are done in 1/4"
increments. If a hat is under 22" I
will call it small---if it is over 22 1/2"
I will use large as the size. If by chance
a hat is over 23" it will be extra large.

![]() This hat is not vintage, it is only a few years old but I decided to put it on the site for two reasons. The quality and the look. The Grevi company in Italy has been making hats for over 135 years. Their hats use the finest materials and employ the art of fine millinery handwork, seldom seen today. They are carried in high end shops and ornate pieces like this easily run in the $200 range. The look is pure romance and nostalgia and it would be a beautiful complement to any matching ensemble... Vintage or Contemporary. The style reminds me of the early 1900s. It is done in a sage green sisal with a soft crown and moderate wired brim. The edge of the brim is shaped into little waves giving a pretty scalloped effect. It is festooned with silk flowers and very fine netting. The focal flower is an antique pink cabbage rose. The netting around the brim is sprinkled with little dots of chenille. This hat was never worn and still has it's original hang tag. It is an average size and should fit a 22" well. Mint Condition $75.00 |

![]() Although this hat is not vintage (it is only a few years old) I put it on the site for two reasons. It's beautiful quality and retro look. The Grevi company in Italy has been making hats for over 135 years. Their hats use the finest materials and employ the art of fine millinery handwork, seldom seen today. They are carried in high end shops and ornate pieces like this easily run in the $200 range. The look is elegant and nostalgic and it would be a beautiful complement to any matching ensemble... Vintage or Contemporary. The body is done in pale pink coiled straw. It has an inverted curve to the crown (see detail pictures) and a wide cupped brim that frames the face in a most flattering way. The brim and around the crown are swathed with pleats of iridescent organza, the pretty color of pink grapefruit! It is festooned with two matching silk cabbage roses. Feminine yet sophisticated it would be perfect for so many occasions....a garden wedding...a day at the races...afternoon tea or just plain old weekend best. This hat was worn only once. It is an average size and should fit a 22" well. Mint Condition $70.00 |

![]() The 1960s were a VERY interesting time in Fashion. The decade saw so many trends and styles it boggles my mind. It was a decade of experiment and extremes and headwear was no exception. From architectural minimalism to over the top romantic, Fashion ran the gamut. Flower mania exploded in the 1960s. Big, bold and colorful flowers adorned everything from clothing to wallpaper. This Pale Pink straw hat by Marcelle Originals is a fabulous example of 60's floral fantasy. It has a high crown and inverted brim. Circling the hat are HUGE silk Hibiscus flowers in shades of pink and the entire hat is swathed in pink net. It is a size 22 which is average. If you have a smaller head size (less than 22") it will come down lower on the face, more cloche-like.....like my picture. If you have an average head size it is going to sit higher on your head. This was the intended look....dramatic. Excellent Condition $85.00 |

Fantastic example of 1960s Flower-mania Millinery.
The 60s love affair with big and bold floral motifs found an eager following in the millinery trade. This surreal bubble hat is enveloped in huge, fantastical blossoms. Nestled within each one is a separate little flower. The entire bouquet is cradled in green tulle which is gathered into place with a spring green velvet ribbon and bow. There is a narrow pale green brim which frames the opening and adds interest to the shape. This style hat was designed to sit high on the head echoing the huge bouffant hairdos of the day. I think they work best with classic monochromatic dresses or suits and a sleek simple hairstyle, but that's just me. Whoever wears this hat will obviously have a creative nature and come up with their own style to showcase it's unusual beauty! There is no designers label, only a union made tag inside so I do not know who created it. The size is a generous medium which means a little more than 22". It was never worn and is in perfect condition. Mint Condition $75.00 |

1960s Retro 20s Cloche style straw. During the late 1960s and early 70s fashion had a fling with the Flapper era. Dropped waist dresses, T strap shoes and cloche style hats. Less than twenty years later it came around again (with shoulder pads) in the 1980s and it wouldn't be surprised at all if we see a new version of Flapper Style on the runway sometime soon. This darling hat has a white par-sisol straw body molded into a cloche with asymmetrical rolled brim. It is festooned with pink and white silk roses, buds and leaves. A pink velvet ribbon circles the crown and there is also a velvet ribbon tucked into the flowers. The sizing ribbon is white grossgrain. There is no label inside. It came from the estate of a prominent family in the Boston area and I was told the woman had many of her things custom created. It is in wonderful condition. Perfect on the outside with just a very little discoloration inside around the band. It will come in the vintage hatbox it was stored in. The size is med/ small. If your head measures just 22" or less it should fit right. My hat mannequin is smaller than a real person so the hat appears slightly larger than it actually is. Excellent Condition $65.00 |

Cute as a button! Adorable little braided straw hat. There are a couple of different ways to wear this hat. If you wear it towards the front of the head as pictured it has the style of an earlier era. During the Depression this was a popular look. If you wear it in back of the head it looks more like a junior-miss piece from the 40s. It is hard for me to date because it has no label just a pleated gross grain ribbon inside. However the patina on the straw tells me it is an earlier piece. The straw is a caramel color. It has a powder-blue velvet ribbon around the crown finishing in a dainty bow and pink velvet daisy in front. The size is also hard to determine. It does not fit down on the head since the crown is so shallow. I am going to say small/med. It measures 9 1/2" across the brim front to back. My hat mannequin is smaller than a real person so the hat appears slightly larger than it actually is. The condition is lovely but the ribbons have become dingy over the years. This is normal for vintage and does not detract from the charm. These hats were secured in place with hat pins back in the day but another good trick to keep them on the head is with a thin covered elastic cord. These cords attach to the ribbon inside the hat and are worn under the hair in back of the head. It anchors the hat in place beautifully and is not seen. I will gladly put one inside the hat free of charge if you like. Just indicate that on the order form Excellent Condition $52.00 |

Pixie Chic! Stylish yet whimsical, a winning combination from the 1940s in black velvet and exotic feathers. The body of the hat is velvet over molded buckram. It has a pointed crown and rolled edge. The feather coque on the side is red and saffron with one dramatic pheasant feather. The style has the same surreal flavor as similar creations by Elsa Schiaparelli. Very avant-garde then AND now. There is no label but it came from the estate of a prominent family in the Boston area and I was told the woman had many of her things custom created. I was a custom milliner for a number of years so I know this hat would have required hours of tedious and meticulous crafting by a master. I am sure it is not a Schiaparelli but it certainly was influenced by her style. It will come in the plain vintage hat box it had been stored in. The original owner most likely used bobby pins to secure her hat in place but I will be happy to add an elastic cord if you like. The cord attaches to the ribbon inside the hat and is worn under the hair in back of the head. It anchors the hat in place beautifully and is not seen. Just indicate this on the order form. The size is in the medium range. My hat mannequin is smaller than a real person so the hat appears slightly larger than it actually is. No flaws at all. Excellent Condition $98.00 |

1930s Straw boater. The straw boater originated as a mans hat but women have been borrowing the style over and again, since 1880. It is a true classic. This lovely version is from the 1930s. It is done in fine straw braid with a pleated silk faille band. A generous cluster of velvet and silk flowers at the back lends an element of femininity. The perfect little summer hat, just enough brim to shade the eyes and keep you cool. The size is a generous medium and will fit up to 22 1/2. My hat mannequin is smaller than a real person so the hat appears slightly larger than it actually is. A covered elastic cord has been added to secure it on the head and it will come with it's original black glass hat pin. The straw and the inside band have the normal patina of age but there is no fading on the pleated band or flowers. Their colors are still vibrant and beautiful. Excellent Condition $95.00 |

Wonderful cellophane straw hat from the late 1930s - early 1940s. True cellophane is a man made fiber produced from plant materials. It was invented in 1908 by a Swiss chemist by the name of Jaques Brandenberger who was working for a French textile firm. By 1927 cellophane became available to the public. By the 1930s it was being used in the millinery trade, extensively, to create a new type of straw hat. Cellophane straw is lightweight and shiny and can be made in any color. This version is done in a dark navy, the straw is finely braided into a round sailor like cap (similar to a beret). The front edge is festooned with beautiful velvet flowers, leaves and berries. Since the hat was stored away properly the colors are rich and still very vibrant. It has a nose length veil. The size is a medium, 22. My hat mannequin is smaller than a real person so the hat appears larger than it actually is. A covered elastic cord has been added to secure it on the head and it will come with it's original black glass hat pin. Excellent Condition $75.00 |
