Black silk flowers and leaf tendrils
comprise
this sculpted "cone" hat
from the
late 1950s -early 60s.
The hat has a buckram frame with dome shape.
At the peak are clusters of inky blossoms
with wispy leaves cascading down to frame
the edge.
A whimsical style, it looks well with hair
that is pulled back or cut close. It would
be especially cute worn over a short pixie
cut. The perfect foil to your little black
dress.
The size is flexible and should fit most
heads. It has a wired frame which holds nicely
but a couple of bobby pins discreetly placed
beneath the leaves would help secure it.
There is no label left but the millinery
work is lovely.

Very early 1950s narrow, velour felt, pill
box in sage green.
On the right a cluster of sculpted
felt flowers
cascade over the temple. Prong set
rhinestones
adorn the petals like dew drops. A
single
long quill in matching green accents
the
crown creating a touch of drama to
this otherwise
demure chapeaux
The inside edge is defined by velvet
covered
wire with side prongs to hold it on
the head.
The felt is a velvety soft blend of wool
and fur. In the millinery trade this kind
of felt is called velour and it has always
been considered the finest material.
There is no makers label, just a woven
label
that reads genuine velour.
The size is flexible and should fit
most
heads.Although it does have the wire
prongs
a couple of bobby pins will help to
secure
it in place.

Fabulous Angora felt Toque from the 1960s
by Mr. Josephs New York.
As a milliner I am completely fascinated
by this hat. It is difficult to see, because
of the plush surface, but the felt has been
molded in deep concentric ridges creating
a subtle surface texture on the outside.
You can see a picture of the inside structure
if you click on the picture and go to the
detail page. I wish I could have seen the
head block that the designer used to create
this wonderful hat. It would have looked
like a wooden bee hive!
Aside from the unique shape the felt material
is remarkable. I have seen a lot of angora
felts in my day but this is by far the most
lush. Inside the stamp of the felt maker
reads Mousse HB. The color is a rich lilac.
There is a stunning jeweled accent stitched
to one side. The jewel piece is a full 4"
long. Clusters of prong set, pink aurora
borealis rhinestones are mixed with large,
rainbow, purple and pink marquise and pear
shaped crystals. Lots of hats from this era
sport sparkly brooches, often put on by the
owner, but this piece was made for this hat.
It is sewn on permanently and does not have
a pin back. This would have been a very expensive
hat in it's day!
The size is average, 22, and it is meant
to sit up high towards the back of the head.
There are absolutely no flaws and it looks
like it was never worn.

Late 1930s draped toque with modified
snood.
Just a hint of medieval style which was very
popular at the time.
Rose pink velveteen gathers into a round
cushion made to perch at the front of the
head. In back an open net of velveteen cord
hugs the crown. The net is tethered with
brass findings.
In it's era this hat would have been considered
the height of fashion, created to coordinate
with the fussy hairdos that were popular.
Hair was worn long, smooth over the crown
with a flip in front and curled or rolled
under at the ends.
The size is flexible and it should fit on
just about any head. The label reads Marshall Field and company, Debutante Room.

Dramatic black picture hat from the late
1940s - early 50s.
Very fine braid coiled into a huge brim with
shallow rounded crown. The hat is detailed
with a narrow black velvet ribbon sash and
has two wired velvet streamers on either
side. Inside is a bias velvet band which
circles the crown of the head. I added a
millinery elastic cord (I was a milliner)
to wear under the hair in back to keep the
hat in place. It is easier than using bobby
pins and with such a large brim, anchoring
the hat with an elastic works much better.
Simple and elegant it can easily be
worn
with any number of styles but in it's
era
this hat would have been worn with
either
a full skirt and cinch waist dress
or...
a dress or suit with narrow pencil
skirt.
Gloves and a smart bag would have been
completed
the ensemble.
There is no label but the straw is of a
very fine quality indicating it would have
been a better maker. The brim measures a
full 18" from side to side and the size
should fit most heads.

Pretty! Pretty! Pretty!
1960s cloche style hat in pink. The body
of the hat is pink felt but the under brim
has been covered with pink wool jersey for
a contrast look. The crown is festooned with
swirls of silk ribbon mixed with feathers
and velvet or silk flower petals. There is
a pale pink tulle overlay which has dots
of iridescent glitter. The whole thing is
neatly tied together with a pink grossgrain
ribbon band which ends in a looped detail
on the right. This one is pretty enough to
eat! Unfortunately the designers label is
gone but judging by it's quality and unusual
detail work it must have been a high end
item. The size is medium (22").

THE most unique and stunning ladies fedora
style hat!
The era for this one is the early 1950s.
It was created from a wonderful and unusual
tweed felt. The felt has a mohair feel. The
base color is slate blue and it is shot with
black and tan "tufts" giving it
a tweed appearance. The brim is generous
measuring nearly 14" across. The crown
is 4 1/2" high and rounded. It has a
wide gross grain head band and double bow
off to the side. The ribbon matches the hat
color and is decoratively top stitched in
multiple colored threads. The brim is shaped
to dip down over the right eye. You know,
that "Lady of Mystery" kind of
thing. (My husband LOVES that look!). There
is only a union label but the felt is printed
with Etoile Melange blend felt. 70% wool
30% rayon. Henry Pollak Inc. New York.

1960s exaggerated Pillbox swathed in iridescent
graphite feathers. Simple and elegant.
The
pill box stands 5" tall in the
back
and 6" tall in the front. The
feathers
are laid over a felt base and held
in place
with sheer black netting. Off to the
left
side is a separate spray of feathers.
It
is beautifully lined with black and
silver
brocade. The label inside reads

This hat is designed to sit on top
of the
back of the head. The mannequin I show
it
on is small and the hat comes down
quite
low. Ideally I think it should perch
a bit
higher, but that is really a matter
of taste.
The size is medium/large. And it is

Fabulous and Fun!
Flapper look from the 1970s. During
the 1970s
there existed a real fascination with
retro.
In particular the Roaring 20's. For
a while
they were re-designing dropped waist
dresses,
T strap shoes and of course the flapper
style
hats. The scene which embraced this
was young,
"artistic"and quite avant-quarde.
Designed by Don Anderson of New York the hat you see here has a felt
cap covered with iridescent feathers
the
color of carnival glass. The feathers
are
held in place with black netting. Off
to
the right is a generous coque of the
same
feathers which adds a wonderful theatrical
element. The only thing missing here
is the
spit curl over the forehead, yes? The
hat
is on the med/small side. It is meant
to
fit closely. One tiny place on the
netting
had to be tacked but the mend is undetectable.

This whimsey is an absolute work of art!
The era is the earlier 1940s when restrictions
on the use of fabric dictated a stark and
lean line to fashion. Many of the women of
the day however did not loose their desire
for thoroughly feminine indulgences. Since
the majority of materials used in millinery
details were exempted from restriction many
of the resulting styles were rich and colorful
and totally female! This lovely piece consists
of a spray of pastel roses sitting in a "nest"
of gathered tricolored netting (red,yellow
and sage). Cascading down the back are sepia
brown bows made from real silk faille ribbon
(silk was rarely used in the garment indusry
at this time but could still be found in
trimmings). The owner would have worn it tilted
towards the front of the head. There are
two cloth covered hatpins which were made
to match. The structure beneath is sepia milan
braid. This was an expensive hat! The label
reads Elm Shoppe inc. Worcester Mass. The hat measures 13"
from the front to the end of the ribbons.
It will come to you in the original
box.
