Vintage Patterns and Sewing Books
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT VINTAGE PATTERNS.
The sizing used in vintage patterns bears no resemblance to modern clothing sizes. It's all about measurements. We include the size for informational reasons only. If you are looking for a specific size pattern please refer to the measurements provided. If the pattern you love is not your size do not despair. Any pattern can be graded up or down to the desired size. it really isn't all that much extra work since you will probably be transferring your pattern to heavier paper anyway. Here are a few good articles I found online with clear grading instructions. You can also pay a good seamstress to do this for you if you don't feel confident trying it yourself.
How to Resize a Pattern (Sense and Sensibility)
Making Sense of Pattern Grading also Quick Reference for Cut and Spread Pattern Grading (Threads Magazine)
Grade a Bodice to a Larger Size also Grade a Sleeve to a Smaller Size (Burda Style)
Along with copying your pattern to more sturdy paper (brown wrapping paper works great) I highly recommend you sew a quick muslin or mock up of the garment before cutting into your costly fashion fabric, especially if it's vintage and you can't get any more!. You can do all your fitting on the muslin then transfer the alterations to your pattern. You only need to do this once and it can really prevent disaster later on.
