Three piece vintage/antique silk christening set. I purchased this breathtaking set at an estate sale where I was told it had ben handed down for a number of generations. I am going to guess it is approximately 80- 100 years old because of the materials used.
The set consists of a coat, gown and underslip.
The satin brocade of the coat is silk with a delicate floral pattern, the color is antique ivory. It has a hand embroidered cape-collar trimmed with mesh lace and 3/4 length sleeves. The coat is cut with a rounded yoke which closes with two glass buttons, it is 40" long. It is lined in cotton twill and has an underlining for warmth.
The christening gown is done is gossamer sheer silk with machine embroidered border. The bodice is trimmed with inset lace, pink silk ribbon and delicate embroidery. The short sleeves are also edged in lace. It closes in back wit mother of pearl buttons.
The underslip is done in the same embroidered silk as the dress. It has a fine cotton batiste bandeau top that wraps around and must be pinned in place.
Although the set is in beautiful condition ...I worry the dress and slip may be too delicate to actually be worn by an infant. The coat is sturdy enough but the silk of the dress and underslip are delicate. It would make a stunning display piece or outfit for an antique doll. Infant size approx. 3 mos. with the following measurements
Coat
Shoulder to shoulder 10 1/2"
Length 40"
Gown
Shoulder to shoulder 9"
Length 34"
Chest 20"
Condition - The dress and slip are in excellent condition - no flaws
The coat has no flaws on the outside but the lining has a few stains near the hem. I did not try to clean them because they are on the inside and cannot be seen with the coat closed.
