1940s-50s Country stripe apron

# 5526

I can't say for sure why, but this apron reminds me of Claire McCardell, my favorite American designer. Maybe it's the warm muted stripes she was famous for or just the casual country feel (according to the book Claire McCardell, Redefining Modernism, she loved being at her farmhouse in Frenchtown,New Jersey). For whatever reason this apron brought her to mind when I saw it.

.... a quaint home made apron from the later 40s -early 50s. The material is a wide stripped cotton with a soft, "homespun" feel, the colors are muted shades of cranberry, lavender and goldenrod. The style is fairly long and gathered at the waist with wide deep pockets at the hem. The pockets are quite roomy and fun looking.

It has the following measurements. Top to bottom 24" side to side 32" and full length of waist band with sash extensions 64".

1950s Butterflies and Flowers apron

# 5522

Yellow Butterflies and Aqua Flowers on white polished cotton. So very pretty!

This vintage 1950s apron is comprised of  two layers, making it reversible, with a different style on each side. It combines a printed polished cotton with sheer aqua organdy. One side has a sheer overlay with scalloped pocket detail that spans the top portion and a printed underlayer for an illusion effect ....and the other side has a short printed fabric overlay with sheer underlayer. The edges are defined with aqua bias trim. It ties around the back with self fabric sashes that extend from the waist band.

Average in size, the apron portion measures 18" top to bottom and 29" across. The total length of sashes and waist band is 58"

The condition is excellent and it was never used. The only flaw is actually original to the apron. The organdy underlatyer has a thin line where the weave skipped a thread. This is REALLY minor and only apparent upon close scrutiny.

1950s handmade cotton organdy apron

# 5531

Sheer, Spring Green, vintage cotton organdy with applique details make up this pretty home sewn apron from the 1950s.

The appliques are coral, cut out flowers from polished cotton. They are outlined with two rows of zig-zag stitching in two colors... black and dark green, a nice effect. The same zig-zag stitching defines decorative scallops, all the edges and the one pocket. The apron gathers into a 2" waistband with tie-sash extensions. An average size it has the following measurements waist to hem 22", side to side 29", and total length of waist band and sashes 67".

This apron was never used but in it's years of storage, one of the folded edges of the waistband became a little dingy. Usually I hand wash before selling in a situation like this but it was so faint and in such a little area,  I decided to let it be. Once you wash an organdy apron it looses it's "brand new crispness". It can, of course, be hand washed and a little starch will give the fabric body again but I will leave that up to the new owner. I think it's fine as is. I couldn't even capture the flaw in my photos because it blends in.

1950s sheer organdy apron w/ hanky detail

# 5533

Feminine and sweet this 1950s vintage apron is done in pure white cotton organdy with the prettiest handkerchief detail pocket.

A clever design... the pocket is made from a flowered hanky, set on the diagonal which has been appliqued at the bottom and left open at the top. The top corner is stitched into the waist band to secure it. and a small plastic ring is used to gather the loose fabric. This keeps the opening from gaping. This would was considered a fancy apron, to be worn over the hostesses dress while she served her company. The delicate hanky pocket was really just for show.

The apron gathers into a self fabric waistband with tie sashes. The gathers work well over a full skirt but look just as nice over a narrow one. The measurements are as follows waist to hem 20", side to side 36", and full length of waist  with sashes  72".

1960s Quirky folk print apron

# 5523

NWT colorful and quirky folk print, vintage apron from the 1960s.

The 1960s saw a kaleidoscope of  trends in fashion and home decor....from Mod to Romantic. Old world folk prints were particularly popular and this apron is a great example. Colorful stylized images surround a festive central motif of a couple in traditional attire. The edges are bound with red bias trim and it has a red waistband with sash extensions. The apron was never worn and still has it's original stick-on label which reads Parisian Prints all pure linen.
