From the estate of Fredrick George Payne, Senator from Maine (1953-1959), a 1950s, fur felt derby or bowler hat from the 1950s by Dobbs.
The derby (US term) or bowler is a smart looking hat with a long and interesting history dating back to England in the mid 1800s. One of the most popular hat styles ever, it was worn by all sectors of society from "working stiffs" to the "upper crust". It has a dome shaped crown and small curled brim.
The color of this one is the darkest navy blue , almost black. It has a wide gross grain band and double side bow. It is lined in cream taffeta and has a wide leather sweat band. The gold Dobbs Fifth Avenue logo is printed onto the lining and the original owners initials are stamped into the leather band along with the word Benoits (Benoits was a chain of mens clothing stores in Maine).
The size is Medium, a 7 1/8 and will accommodate a 22 1/4" head measurement. The hat is in excellent condition inside and out and looks nearly new. I will include the original Dobbs box for storage purposes. The box itself intact but the outside paper is fairly beat up.
