Hats

To determine a woman's hat size measure the head all around (front to back) at the center of the forehead. The measurement 22" has traditionally been considered the "average" size we will call that medium. Hat sizes are done in 1/4" increments. If a hat is under 22" I will call it small---if it is over 22 1/2" I will use large as the size. If by chance a hat is over 23" it will be extra large

1960s floral bubble hat

# 2474

Fantastic example of 1960s Flower-mania Millinery.

The 60s love affair with big and bold floral motifs found an eager following in the millinery trade. This surreal bubble hat is enveloped in huge, fantastical blossoms. Nestled within each one is a separate little flower. The entire bouquet is cradled in green tulle which is gathered into place with a spring green velvet ribbon and bow. There is a narrow pale green brim which frames the opening and adds interest to the shape.

This style hat was designed to sit high on the head echoing the huge bouffant hairdos of the day. I think they work best with classic monochromatic dresses or suits and a sleek simple hairstyle, but that's just me. Whoever wears this hat will obviously have a creative nature and come up with their own style to showcase it's unusual beauty!

There is no designers label, only a union made tag inside so I do not know who created it. The size is a generous medium which means a little more than 22". It was never worn and is in perfect condition.

1960s lilac angora toque

# 2471

Fabulous Angora felt Toque from the 1960s by Mr. Josephs New York.

As a milliner I am completely fascinated by this hat. It is difficult to see, because of the plush surface, but the felt has been molded in deep concentric ridges creating a subtle surface texture on the outside. You can see a picture of the inside structure in the detail photos. I wish I could have seen the head block that the designer used to create this wonderful hat. It would have looked like a wooden bee hive!
Aside from the unique shape the felt material is remarkable. I have seen a lot of angora felts in my day but this is by far the most lush. Inside the stamp of the felt maker reads Mousse HB. The color is a rich lilac.

There is a stunning jeweled accent stitched to one side. The jewel piece is a full 4" long. Clusters of prong set, pink aurora borealis rhinestones are mixed with large, rainbow, purple and pink marquise and pear shaped crystals. Lots of hats from this era sport sparkly brooches, often put on by the owner, but this piece was made for this hat. It is sewn on permanently and does not have a pin back. This would have been a very expensive hat in it's day!

The size is average, 22, and it is meant to sit up high towards the back of the head. There are absolutely no flaws and it looks like it was never worn.

1960s Shearling Lamb Fur Hat w/Pom Pom

# 5636

Keep cozy and warm in apres ski, late 60s style with this fun vintage fur hat by Mr. John Jr. Fur hats were all the rage during the late 60s and into the 70s. The ski bunny look was no longer reserved for the slopes or the lodge, it became a winter fashion statement.

Mr. John was a better label in millinery and worn by the most fashionable of women. In keeping with the "youthquake" movement of the 1960s, their Jr. line was created with the younger generation in mind. A take off on the more sophisticated fur hats of the day, this fur hat sports a whimsical twist with a large furry pom pom on top. The fur is a lush Shearling lamb...winter white underfur, tipped with coffee color highlights. It has a soft jersey band for comfort and is unlined.

The size will fit an average to large range from 22" up to 23".

Excellent Condition - no flaws to note.
