Article# 10... Musings by Chanel
I was just reading a March 1968 Mcalls magazine
and came across a wonderful little compilation
(assembled by Joseph Barry) of quotes from
Coco Chanel. Here are my three favorites.
All you vintage fans will love this… Coco
said "I wear my own suits for seven eight
years. Finally when I give them away and
see them on someone else, I wonder why I
ever gave them away. They look better than
before. I detest what is new. In a new dress
I feel like a Parvenu dressed for Sunday.
I want to go riding horseback in it, break
a seam so I have to use a safety pin. Then
I know it is mine."
During the 60s when the fashion was to see
how tiny a skirt could become and still exist
Chanel had this to say….
"Women who are afraid to wear mini skirts
should be praised for their courage.
The best form of resistance is still intelligence"
Though she abhorred the mini-skirt Coco was
by no means "uptight". In my opinion
she designed some of the most elegant and
sensual garments ever made. In her own words…
" A dress should be able to walk with
you, dance with you, dine with you. It should
move as your body moves, as naturally as
the leopards skin - and as beautifully."
Hats off to you Madame Chanel your inspiration
is eternal.
